What works today, and what we cannot do
We did not find a national obligation to issue electronic invoices between businesses in Malta — and that means «we looked and did not find it», not «it does not exist». BUT THAT DOES NOT HELP YOU YET, because WE DO NOT ISSUE THE INVOICE: the VAT scheme not built is on our side, and without it we would put 25 % Danish VAT and Danish legal references on your invoice. We refuse rather than send something wrong in your name. What works today: reminders under Maltese law, the bank connection and customers. We also cannot do: the reference day for the statutory rate, fixed recovery compensation, VAT return, Maltese chart of accounts.

What you can use today
worksLate payment interest — and it is simple interestThe statutory rate is the ECB reference rate plus eight percentage points. The sources are explicit that the interest is SIMPLE, not compounded, and we write that down because it is the kind of detail a system gets wrong quietly: interest charged on interest would produce a larger claim without anything failing. Our calculation has always been simple — amount times rate times days over 365 — so nothing changes here. It is written down so that it cannot change by accident.
worksBank connectionPSD2 applies across the Union and covers Maltese banks. Transactions arrive by themselves and are matched. A bank transaction does not depend on a chart of accounts.
worksCustomers, quotations and due datesCustomer records, quotations, due dates and history. No tax dependency. What we cannot do
we cannotVAT scheme not built — we do not issue the invoiceTHIS IS OUR GAP, NOT MALTESE LAW. We have no Maltese VAT codes, and without them an invoice cannot be issued for a seller in Malta: the rate would be 25 % Danish VAT and the legal references on the document would be the Danish Business Authority's. The owner chose option A on 27 September 2026 — refuse issuance for non-Danish sellers until the market is settled — precisely so that a Danish legal reference does not end up on a foreign invoice. That is why the payment link cannot be bought here: the link sits ON the invoice, and there is no invoice. We found no national e-invoicing obligation, but that changes nothing when the obstacle is on our side.
we cannotThe reference day for the statutory rateEight points over the ECB reference rate — but WHICH DAY that rate is taken from, we have not read. Slovenia says the half-year: the rate on 1 January governs the first six months. The Czech Republic locks it to the half-year the default began in. Finland rounds the ECB rate UP to the nearest half point before adding the eight. Four countries, four answers to the same directive, so a neighbour's answer cannot be carried across. Our calculation asks the caller for the day and refuses without it.
we cannotFixed recovery compensationThe interest we can claim. The fixed compensation WE HAVE NOT READ — neither the amount nor the regulation that gives it. The calculation refuses it: a figure nobody has read would end up in a demand carrying YOUR name, not ours.
we cannotVAT returnThe return is filed with the Commissioner for Tax and Customs. We do not produce it: the figures sit in a Danish chart of accounts. You can file it yourself or through your accountant. Deadlines and the form we have not looked up.
we cannotMaltese chart of accounts and annual accountsOur ledger is Danish, so no Maltese annual accounts arise, and filing with the Malta Business Registry is not something we can do. Whether Maltese law prescribes a chart of accounts we have not established — the same open question as in eight other markets, and it cannot be inferred from a neighbour. Why this page is in English — and what that costs you
English is one of Malta's own official languages, alongside Maltese. This page is not a translation we fell back on; it is a language the law itself is published in. But we do not carry Maltese, and that is a gap on our side rather than a judgement about the language. THE OTHER HALF MATTERS MORE: Malta is now the third English market we run, after the United Kingdom and Ireland. Three jurisdictions, one language. A reminder letter chosen by LANGUAGE rather than by COUNTRY would cite the wrong statute and, for the United Kingdom, the wrong currency — we have made that mistake, in that exact shape, and the guards that now run on every build were written because of it.
WE SAY THIS PLAINLY: the VAT rates — standard 18 %, reduced 12 %, 7 % and 5 %, plus zero rating for certain supplies — and the statutory interest were read on 27 September 2026 in professional sources and in references to finance.gov.mt, NOT in the VAT Act or the regulations themselves. The reference day was not read at all. Check the rates before anyone works out an amount on them.
Why we write it this way
Accounting software does not notice its own mistakes: the customer notices them, or nobody does. That is why what we cannot do sits at the top of this page, and why every rate carries a date. A rate without a date will never be checked again.
